ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot by OpenAI, experienced a global outage, leaving millions of users unable to access its services. The disruption affected both free and premium users, but services were restored within hours. OpenAI provided updates and confirmed the resolution, while users took to social media to share frustrations and memes.

ChatGPT's Global Outage
OpenAI's widely used AI chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced a global outage that left millions of users unable to access its services on Thursday. The disruption began around 7 PM ET (5:30 AM IST) and affected not only ChatGPT but also OpenAI’s API and Sora services. OpenAI swiftly addressed the issue and managed to restore services by approximately 8 AM IST.
During the downtime, users attempting to log in were greeted with the message, “ChatGPT is currently unavailable.” OpenAI kept users updated via X (formerly Twitter), reassuring them with a post:
"We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix."
By the morning, the company confirmed that ChatGPT and its associated services were fully operational again.
Users Express Frustration and Humor
The outage impacted both free-tier and premium subscribers, leading to widespread discontent. Many users turned to social media to voice their frustration, while others coped with humor.
One user quipped, “ChatGPT is down. Now I have to Google like a caveman,” while another remarked, “A lot of students won’t be able to finish their essays now.” Social media platforms were soon flooded with memes about the disruption, highlighting how integral ChatGPT has become in daily tasks.
Back-to-Back Tech Disruptions
This outage followed another major disruption affecting Meta-owned platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, on Wednesday. These consecutive service failures left millions of users across the globe grappling with connectivity issues.
OpenAI acknowledged the frustration caused by the downtime and kept users informed with updates, stating:
"We're experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry, and we'll keep you updated!"
As services resume normalcy, the back-to-back disruptions underscore the growing reliance on technology platforms and the cascading effects when such systems falter.
